How Gallery 184 Will Work

Gallery 184 will be dedicated to showcasing the work of talented Sussex-based artists and makers, with a carefully curated mix of two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork.

The aim is to create a beautiful, welcoming gallery that offers visitors something new to discover each time they visit, while providing artists with an affordable and supportive opportunity to exhibit their work.

A New Exhibition Every Eight Weeks

The gallery will be completely refreshed every eight weeks, giving both artists and visitors a new experience.

Artists will deliver their work on the Sunday of the exhibition changeover, ready for the new exhibition to open on the Tuesday.

To keep the gallery feeling fresh and ensure everyone has the opportunity to exhibit in different parts of the space, artists will alternate between the front and rear rooms.

If your work is displayed in the front room for one exhibition, it will move to the rear room for the next, and vice versa.

Three-dimensional work will be displayed throughout the gallery, and our wonderful large windows will feature a changing collection of artwork from multiple artists.

Those windows are one of my favourite features of the building, and I cannot wait to fill them with beautiful, ever-changing displays for everyone passing along the High Street to enjoy!

Exhibition Space and Display

One of the most important things to me is that Gallery 184 remains a light, airy and thoughtfully curated space.

I want the artwork to have room to breathe.

For two-dimensional artists, you will be given the measurements of your allocated wall space well in advance of each exhibition, allowing you to plan exactly what you would like to display.

The work you submit should form a cohesive body of work, with pieces that complement one another. Rather than trying to fit as many pieces as possible into the space, the emphasis will be on creating a beautiful, balanced display that allows each artwork to shine.

You will have the option of hanging your work yourself, or you can leave it in my hands. I am more than happy to arrange the hanging for you, although if you choose this option, you will need to trust my curatorial decisions once the exhibition has been installed.

For three-dimensional artists, there is a little more flexibility. Your work could be displayed together in a dedicated area or distributed throughout the gallery and window displays.

We can discuss the best approach when you apply and, if successful, work together to find a display arrangement that complements both your pieces and the gallery as a whole.

The overall aim is to create exhibitions that feel considered, cohesive and welcoming, where every artist's work has the opportunity to shine.

Joining Our Merry Band of Artists!

I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to develop a membership model that is financially sustainable for the gallery, while remaining as accessible and affordable as possible for the artists exhibiting.

Artists must hold their own public/product liability insurance.

There will be three membership options, designed to offer different levels of commitment and flexibility.

Gallery Commission

A commission of 25% will be charged on all artwork sales, regardless of which membership option you choose.

This means that whether you join as a regular exhibiting artist or as a four-week guest artist, the commission rate remains the same.

The commission, alongside the membership fees, helps cover the costs of running Gallery 184, including the premises, utilities, insurance, marketing and day-to-day operation of the gallery.

My aim is to keep the fee structure as fair and transparent as possible, while creating a financially sustainable gallery that provides a beautiful, professional space in which Sussex artists can showcase and sell their work.

Option A — £75 per Month + 25% commission

For artists who are happy to get involved in the day-to-day running of the gallery.

This membership requires an initial commitment of 16 weeks, covering two exhibitions. After this period, it will transfer to a rolling monthly contract with a 28-day notice period.

Members choosing this option will be required to steward in the gallery for 1.5 days every four weeks, equating to three days over an eight-week exhibition.

Stewarding is a wonderful opportunity to meet visitors, talk about your work, get to know the other artists and become part of the gallery community.

Option B — £140 per Month + 25% commission

For artists who would rather leave the gallery running to someone else!

This option is ideal for those who would love to exhibit their work but simply don't have the time or availability to commit to stewarding.

As with Option A, there is an initial commitment of 16 weeks, covering two exhibitions. After this, membership transfers to a rolling monthly contract with a 28-day notice period.

There are no stewarding commitments with this option.

You can quite literally drop off your work and run!

Option C — £150 for Four Weeks + 25% commission

Our Guest Artist Membership — perfect for artists who would like to dip their toes into exhibiting at Gallery 184.

This option offers the opportunity to exhibit your work for four weeks without committing to a longer membership.

There are no stewarding duties, so you can simply deliver your work, leave the gallery to do its thing, and collect any unsold pieces four weeks later.

It's a lovely opportunity to introduce your work to a new audience, particularly if you are curious about exhibiting in a gallery but aren't quite ready for a longer-term commitment.

Opening Hours

Gallery 184 will be open:

Whether you are looking for something special, searching for the perfect gift, or simply fancy spending a little time surrounded by beautiful artwork, you will always be welcome.

There will never be any pressure to buy. Sometimes it is enough to simply enjoy looking at beautiful things!

A Gallery Built Around Artists and Art Lovers

Above all, I want Gallery 184 to become a place that people enjoy visiting.

A gallery that champions the creativity of Sussex, gives talented artists a platform to share their work, and encourages visitors to discover just how much artistic talent exists right here on their doorstep.

I want people to feel comfortable popping in for a browse, asking questions, learning about the artists and the processes behind their work, and returning whenever something catches their eye.

For the artists, I hope to build a supportive and friendly community where we can celebrate one another's successes, share ideas and enjoy being part of something together.

This is all a rather enormous leap into the unknown, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little terrified!

But I am also ridiculously excited about the possibilities.

If you are a Sussex-based artist who would like to join our merry band, I would absolutely love to hear from you.
